Pride Month: Events for 2021

It’s Pride month and we are excited to celebrate LGBTQI+ lives, history and culture. Although some of the UK’s largest and widely renowned celebrations such as Brighton + Hove’s Pride have been postponed until 2022 – we still have a multitude of fantastic events to look forward to in the upcoming months.

London Pride

Although London Pride has been postponed from June to  the 11th of September, there is still plenty to look forward to. With the theme of this year’s celebration entitled Visibility, Unity and Equality, London Pride aims to amplify these values and drive change through a diverse range of voices. They anticipate that this year’s parade will have around 35,000 attendees, with over 300 community groups – something that cannot be missed.

Manchester Pride

Manchester’s Pride Festival is one of the country’s most exciting celebrations of the LGBTQI+ community. The theme of this year’s parade will be the Garden of Freedom and is set to take place between the 27th-30th of August 2021. Although, they have released a statement on the website outlining plans and actions in regard to Covid-19:

“We can’t predict the future and we know that we could find ourselves in a situation in the coming months where we are unable to deliver an in-person festival. Depending on the restrictions, this scenario would see us deliver some socially distanced, in-person live events. If this isn’t possible, we would deliver a series of digital parties.” – Manchester Pride Festival 2021

Birmingham Pride

Birmingham Pride first took place in 1997 and has become one of the most important LGBTQI+ celebrations in the UK. This year’s theme is Stronger Together, and the events will take place between 25th and 26th of September, with further scheduling to happen on the 23rd of September.

Southampton Pride

Southampton’s Pride will be taking place on the 29th of August, with an exciting parade and events to be a part of. Pride in Southampton began in 2016 – where they held vigil in Guildhall Square mourning the loss of life from the Orlando Pulse shooting. Since then, celebrations for the LGBTQI+ community have grown with around 18,000 attendees each year – and now is one of the south-coast’s largest and most popular parades.

Other events and experiences:

Me dear? Gay Dear? Absolutely Dear!

This is a LGBTQI+ walking tour across London’s West End that is “explorative, poke and prod into London’s Gay Past & Present”. With a special LGBTQI+ guest guiding and sharing personal experiences and anecdotes on every tour; this is a great way to have a laugh, and to be entertained whilst engaging with history.

Margate Pride

Another coastal celebration which can be an alternative for the cancellation of Brighton’s Pride events this year. Although there will not be a parade, there will be plenty of activities such as an art tour, a sports day, and plenty of live performances on Cliftonville’s Oval Band Stand. This will be taking place on the 14th of August, and is a great option if you are local, or are looking for an alternative celebration!
