If you are struggling to find work, company websites can be a great way to find positions, as often this is where any jobs will be uploaded to first before any other pages like Indeed. Additionally, not all do get picked up by external job boards. Applying for jobs listed directly by the company – particularly if you do so early – could put you ahead of the game and land you your next job!
These are some of the different company websites and internal job boards to consider:
BBC Careers is a great way to seek full-time opportunities for the BBC, with job advertisements and vacancies even available internationally. They have a simple to use ‘Vacancy Search’ bar that you can use to refine your job search and is updated regularly.
Remember to keep an eye out on the ‘Kick start your career section’ – which encourages graduates, school leavers, and those who wish to start or change their career in journalism a great range of opportunities. They offer a Journalism Apprenticeship Fast Track scheme and a Journalism Apprenticeship Advanced scheme (which was once recognised as the Journalism Trainee Scheme). These schemes last a duration of two years and provide you with the tools and training to then take on a Journalism Researcher role at the BBC.
ITV Jobs have a great range of opportunities which are updated regularly. They also have a search bar, allowing you to filter jobs by keyword and location – which is fast and simple. They offer a News Traineeship, which is great for those wanting to develop and learn skills to then kick start their career in journalism.

Channel 4 Jobs offers internal opportunities, and you can learn more about their departments and teams to gain an understanding of the area of work you are interested in. You can search and apply in the 4Jobs section, and you can also apply for work experience, apprenticeships and talent schemes in the 4Skills area.
Sky offers a range of internal opportunities on their website. The company offers work for people looking to begin their career, you can find more information in the ‘Early Careers’ section. It also details a range of insight days, apprenticeships and work experience available so can be a valuable resource.
Sky also strives for inclusion and wants to celebrate diversity and encourage voices with a range of backgrounds. They state how they are “committed to a target of ‘20 and 5, by 2025’. 20% Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic representation and 5% Black representation.”
News UK Careers is a great website to apply for journalistic opportunities across the UK at organisations like The Times, The Sun or Talk Radio, with access to internal and external vacancies.

Reach plc
Reach plc offers opportunities both national and regional, in print and online, and across the country. With positions for newsbrands such as the Daily Mirror, Daily Express, Sunday People and over 100 distinguished regional titles, it is a treasure trove for those on the journalism job hunt. They also keep their website updated regularly so be sure to keep your eyes peeled.
Hachette advertises a range of internal editorial and writing opportunities on their website, with plenty of entry-level positions for those beginning their careers.
Hachette describes how they aim “to be the publisher and employer of choice for all people, regardless of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality or socio-economic background”.
National World has both regional and national titles, working across print and online, throughout the UK, including the Yorkshire Post, The Scotsman, The Portsmouth News and The Sheffield Star and The Derry Journal. Jobs can be found through the job board from their main website. While it also advertises many other roles outside the journalism industry, it is also where the publisher first advertises its own internal positions, so be sure to check regularly.
DC Thomson
The publisher – best known for publishing The Dundee Courier, The Evening Telegraph and The Sunday Post newspapers, and comics like Oor Wullie, The Broons, The Beano, The Dandy and Commando – has several other publications across the UK, including the very popular women’s magazine and website Stylist. They regularly post vacancies on their own job board, with many different departments to choose from.
